DESIGNER YUMENG WU

Yumeng Wu’s design journey began in her hometown in China. Born into a family of seasoned jade collectors, she was exposed from an early age to rare gemstones and jewellery. Her upbringing not only sparked a strong passion for jewellery, but also fostered a deep understanding of traditional craftsmanship. Surrounded by a refined aesthetic environment, Yumeng developed a keen sensitivity to materials and techniques, cultivating an intuitive appreciation for artisanal detail from a young age.

To broaden her horizons, Yumeng chose to study abroad in the United States, where she pursued a Bachelor's degree in Jewellery and Metal Arts at the California College of the Arts. During her four years in the U.S., she not only mastered advanced jewellery-making techniques, but also encountered a wide range of artistic forms and cultural perspectives. This immersive experience helped her develop a distinct design language—one that weaves emotional narratives into wearable objects. Additionally, Yumeng earned certifications in coloured gemstones and diamond grading from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), laying a solid technical foundation for her professional practice.

DESIGN INNOVATION AND INTEGRATION

After completing her undergraduate studies in the United States, Yumeng Wu went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Fashion Artefact at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. In London—a vibrant, multicultural city—she began to explore how psychology could intersect with jewellery design, using her creations to convey emotion and narrative. She also examined how her artistic background could be reinterpreted and innovated within the context of contemporary fashion. This interdisciplinary direction enriched her design philosophy, making it more diverse and intellectually layered.

In the U.S., Yumeng acquired solid technical skills and developed a strong foundation in contemporary artistic expression. In the U.K., she delved into how fashion design can serve as a vehicle for psychological and emotional storytelling. These cross-cultural academic and life experiences have shaped a distinctive design language, one that reflects a profound understanding of human nature and emotion.

DISTINCT OUTCOMES OF CROSS-CULTURAL DESIGN

Yumeng Wu’s creations often drift between reality and imagination, blending the subtlety and restraint of Eastern culture with the boldness and innovation of Western art. Her GAZE jewellery series explores the theme of the gaze, challenging and subverting traditional power structures embedded in visual perception. Unlike conventional fashion designers, Yumeng sets exceptionally high standards for both craftsmanship and materials. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted by herself, incorporating diverse materials such as resin and metal to produce a visual language that is simultaneously tangible and dreamlike. These works not only reflect her solid foundation in craftsmanship, but also reveal her deep understanding of jewellery design within the fashion context—highlighting her ability to innovate conceptually while remaining grounded in technical precision.
